Albacore Tuna Fishing

This is the bucket list trip, the one people plan their whole summer around. Massive schools of albacore slide up the Washington coast in late summer and stack 35–70 miles offshore, turning the ocean off Westport into a wide‑open tuna ground when conditions line up. Pound for pound, these fish are some of the hardest‑fighting you can hook on a day trip out of this port.

6 Man Express Tuna Fishing, Westport, WA

This is an express‑style trip: leave early, run hard, get to the fish zone at daybreak, and spend the day chasing meat in open water.

Season, timing, and offshore conditions

The primary window for this program is late summer when the warm offshore currents and schools of tuna push into the range of Westport.

  • Main opportunity: August and September
  • Prime range: summer through early fall when the warm water sets up offshore
  • Prime weekends

When the conditions are right, this has become one of the most in‑demand charter options on the Washington coast and a major draw for anglers specifically looking for a one‑day tuna run out of Westport.

What makes this a “bucket list” trip

On a good day offshore, the pace can turn chaotic in the best way.

  • Packs of tuna moving through the spread and hammering baits or jigs
  • Multiple rods folding over at once
  • Fast runs and stubborn battles right at the rail

These fish are widely regarded as some of the hardest‑charging offshore targets available to recreational anglers in this region, especially on stand‑up gear. When the school sticks with you, it can feel like non‑stop work just to keep up and clear rods.

The payoff is a load of solid‑pack, white‑meat tuna that’s perfect for canning, grilling, and searing, and is one of the signature seafoods associated with Westport’s working harbour.

How your day on the water runs

A typical day looks like this:

Check-in

Check in at 5:30 AM, handle licenses, and get settled on board

Leave the dock

Leave the dock at 6:00 AM and run to productive water along the coast

Proven trolling patterns

Set up proven trolling patterns or other techniques, depending on conditions

Adjust depth, speed, location

Adjust depth, speed, and location through the day as the bite and tides change

Back to the marina

Fish through late morning and early afternoon, then head back to the marina

You get a real full‑day window offshore, not a short teaser.

What’s included

  • Rods
  • Reels
  • Bait

All core gear is provided and tuned for Chinook and Coho on the Pacific side of Washington. The crew handles rigging, setting spreads, and coaching you through the fight once something drills the rod.

What to bring

  • Hat and sunglasses
  • Layers and a waterproof jacket
  • Snacks and food for the entire 10 hours
  • Plenty of water and other beverages
  • Seasickness medicine taken well in advance

License & Tipping

License:

  • You need a valid Washington State fishing license
  • A 1‑day license is available onboard for 10 if you don’t already have one

Tipping:
  • Don’t forget to tip your deckhand; they’re working the deck, untangling lines, and helping put meat in the cooler all day
